EARLIEST MEMORY OF A GARDEN

I grew up in a Victorian house in the middle of Leicester. Despite being in the heart of the city we had a beautiful and very peaceful garden. It had a summer house, a rickety old treehouse in a yew tree and lots of apple trees. My younger brother and I used to spend hours in it, mainly gathering leaves, berries and petals to make into potions in the bath.

FAVOURITE PLANTS

I think my favourite plants are mainly all flowers…

hyacinths

eucalyptus

dahlias

sweet peas

narcissi

WHAT AND WHERE IS YOUR GARDEN NOW

I recently moved into a new flat at the top of a big old Victorian house and one of the main reasons I fell in love it with it was the 160ft communal garden – it’s partly walled, undulating and a little wild and I absolutely love it – both from within and looking down on it from my sitting room and kitchen. When I spent time sitting at the end of this garden over the summer, reading or finishing the day with a glass of wine with my new neighbours, it struck me looking back up at the house that it was very similar in feel to the house and garden I grew up in, albeit in on a bigger scale. It felt a bit like I was coming full circle.

FAVOURITE GARDEN OR OUTDOOR SPACE, WHY?

Dulwich Woods since moving to the area and I’ve totally fallen in love – it’s like a wild woodland in the middle of the city and I regularly run through these woods at the weekend. There is also a great coffee shop, St David’s Coffee House, in Forest Hill out the other side of the woods which helps to break the run!

MONEY IS NO OBJECT, DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM GARDEN

I can’t actually think of a more beautiful garden than where I am now in many ways, though I have always dreamt of having an entirely walled kitchen garden too – particularly as I love to cook. And I’d like there to be water, so perhaps there would be a river (that you could wild swim in) at the end of the garden. Or a beach (via a few sand dunes covered in sea heathers).
