Whether assisting on a planted installation, a city project, a site to be built upon or an existing site to recover, we work very much with the client & context to create a space suited to person & place. We collaborate with architects and design teams on a range of projects in both the private & public domain including schools, office courtyards & industrial estates, with a focus on creating quality, considered, long-lasting landscapes
JOH’S APPROACH IS BOTH NATURAL AND HOLISTIC, IT FOCUSES ON ALLOWING THE NATURAL TO DRIFT INTO A MORE NATURAL SETTING FOR WILDLIFE AND INSECTS TO THRIVE. JOH HAS APPROACHED THIS BY ALSO GUIDING THE CLIENT, GROUNDS STAFF AND DESIGN TEAM EARLY, BEFORE REDEVELOPMENT BEGINS, BY SPECIFYING NEW PLANTS, SHRUBS, TREES AND PATHWAYS AND ALSO ENCOURAGING AREAS OF GRASS THAT NEED TO BE CUT AND AREAS THAT BECOME MEADOW.
JOH’S HANDS-ON APPROACH IS AN INSPIRATION – ALREADY THE CAMPUS LANDSCAPE APPEARS MORE NATURAL AND BUILDINGS MORE SET IN THE LANDSCAPE AND BENEFIT FROM IT.

Joh Bates provides her landscape architecture services with professionalism, enthusiasm and a wide knowledge of her field that underpins the efficacy of her design.
We have worked with Joh Bates Studio on two projects, a planted fountain in the grounds of a stately home and currently upon the landscaping of 3.6 hectares of industrial estate. The breadth of conversation between these two projects I believe demonstrates Johʼs versatility and range.
Joh has more than just capability to provide a service, she brings to her work and to those who work with her a heady mix of humanity and magic that is quite rare, refreshing and utterly inspiring.

PROJECT: BRIELLE WAY INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, ISLE OF SHEPPEY
We’ve always had a garden. But it has either been inherited or one that grew over time. We’ve never had one that was designed, that progressed like architecture from investigation to vision, from sketches to completion. Yet the garden feels no less our garden despite the fact we did not dig it or plant it ourselves. For Joh made sure that she nudged us to make radical choices but ones that felt and feel like our own.
But unlike architecture, the garden does change over the seasons and over time. And Joh, who although the landscape architect, never hesitated to roll up her sleeves to help the contractors with the planting. And she has not stopped doing so, returning to give a tweak to her creation.
When the sun shines in summer, the grasses in our garden shimmer in an indulgent gold. The clumps of grass are broken up by the flowers, such as Astrantia, Alliums and Dahlias, breaking through the canopy. And the four Mulberry trees frame it all.

We are delighted with both the hard landscaping and the beautifully sympathetic planting. Each season brings new pleasure as Joh’s design reveals itself.
